How to turn your skin care routine into self-care

Picture this: you're sitting in front of your dressing table looking fresh. You're about to go to bed, so start applying your night care products one by one. When you're done, you lie in bed, roll over on the phone for a few minutes before heading off to the dream world for your night's sleep. But, did you know, is there a better way to make the most of those few minutes? We tell you how to turn your skin care routine into a self-care ritual that will soothe your skin and your mind.

Tip 1: Skincare is self-care

If you already have a morning and evening skin care routine, give yourself a pat on the back. You're doing a good job, honey. This is the first step in a skin care routine. Taking care of your skin, with so many products, is taking care of yourself. Those few precious minutes can help your skin stay hydrated and refreshed, ready to face the day ahead. Tip 2: Allow a few extra minutes for your skin care to be absorbed

According to a 2020 Nielsen report, we spend over 13 hours a day looking at screens. Sure, 8 hours of that might be for work, but that still leaves a significant amount of time absorbing entertainment through a screen. Our point is that you can afford to take a few extra minutes out of this to devote to your skincare/self-care routine. One of the most common skin care mistakes we make is not allowing enough time for products to penetrate our skin and be absorbed before we apply the next product. Our skin is not a flat surface either – there are lots of pores, hairs and fine lines that make up the curves and contours of our face. When applying serums and oils, spend a little extra time massaging these products in small circular motions with your fingertips or a face roller, focusing on areas of pigmentation or fine lines. If your skin is sensitive, you can tap or press these products, making sure to cover any areas you want the product to absorb. We generally tend to carry a lot of stress on our face – especially our eyebrows and jawline. Slow down, take a deep breath, enjoy the present moment and gently rub your temples and the side of your jaw while you wait for your skin care products to sink in.

We are all busy people and sometimes we need to multitask. Why not combine self-care with something you enjoy?

For example, our hair masks only take two minutes to work. That means two minutes devoted exclusively to yourself - two minutes of gentle stretching, flossing (make your dentist proud) or drinking some water. It's up to you what you do, but make those minutes all about you. Some of our favorite skin care and self-care combos are face masks while meditating (all you need is five minutes), hand cream while watching our favorite shows (post-mani treatment), or moisturizing while refreshing a podcast. So skin care versus self care – is there a difference? Yes, but you can also easily combine the two so that they go hand in hand.
